An open-source project named OpenSimulator already has a concept of a decentralized metaverse. which has been in use since 2007 and is continuing in use OpenSim, as its fans refer to it, allows anyone with some technical ability to set up a server to host their own virtual world to which they and others can connect, or to pay one of several hosting services to do so for them.
