Google has dismissed the developer who claimed that an unreleased AI system had become sentient, citing violations of employment and data security regulations.
Blake Lemoine, a software engineer at Google, said that after exchanging thousands of messages with LaMDA, a conversation technology, it had reached a level of consciousness.
Google said that the engineer had been put on leave in June. The company said it only said Lemoine’s claims were “wholly unfounded” after giving them a lot of thought. It was said that he had been working at Alphabet for seven years. Google said in a statement that it is “very serious” about developing AI and is committed to “responsible innovation.”
